Pregabalin A Medicine To Treat Epilepsy

Pregabalin a medicine to treat epilepsy and anxiety is a new seizure medication being introduced in the market. It is also referred to as” Tegretol” in Europe and “Prozac” in the U.S. The drug works by blocking the stimulation of seizures that occur in a person suffering from epilepsy. The drug is generally used in the early stages of epileptic seizures to minimize or avoid any undesirable side effects which may occur.

Pregabalin is a member of a class of antipsychotic medicines known as Serotonergic and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (NETI). This class comprises mainly of medicines that are used to treat depression, anxiety, hypertension, fatigue, pain, nausea, hypersexuality, and speech problems. The neuroleptics in this group of medicines include Neurontin, Norpramin, Tegretol, Clomipramine, Anafranil, and Cyproheptadine. Pregabalin belongs to the class of anticonvulsant medicines which have an exceptional effect in reducing the convulsive behavior associated with seizure disorders. It is therefore mainly used for recreational use, to reduce the symptoms of epilepsy.

FDA Approved

Pregabalin (also known as “Pregabalin”) was first approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1997 for use in the treatment of intractable epilepsy. A patient having an uncontrolled seizure with the frequency of frequency seizure or a combination of seizures must be given a prescription for Pregabalin. Pregabalin can be administered either by itself in a dosage strength of twenty or by taking a single dose after meals. Pregabalin is available without a prescription in oral liquid, capsule, and topical gels. Pregabalin cannot be purchased over the counter.

Effective Symptomatic Treatment

Pregabalin is considered an effective symptomatic treatment in patients with moderate to severe symptomatic epilepsy. The side effects associated with Pregabalin are mainly sedation and fatigue. These side effects decrease with the increased use of Pregabalin. Pregabalin is usually prescribed to people having more than four seizures per week.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Pregabalin can be administered by people suffering from different types of diseases. Pregabalin can also be administered by people undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Pregabalin is generally not prescribed along with other drugs, but it can be taken with medicines that cure other conditions like diabetes, depression, migraine, traumas, and blood pressure. Pregabalin should not be used for patients who suffer from convulsions or seizures. Pregabalin should not be used by pregnant women and people who are under a lot of stress or who are under the influence of alcohol.

Dose

Pregabalin is usually introduced into the system of patients in a dosage of ten to fifteen grams daily. It may cause unpleasant side effects like nausea and vomiting if it is taken in a large quantity. Pregabalin – liquids are available at all times to replace the solid dosage forms.

Pregabalin Variants

Pregabalin comes in two major variants – liquids and gels. It has been observed that persons using Pregabalin as their epilepsy treatment have seen good results and have reduced the seizures and the frequency of epileptic attacks. Pregabalin is an Epi-LASIK surgery drug that is not covered by insurance and is considered experimental. However, the advantages associated with the medicine should be weighed against the possible side effects of the drug and should be assessed before use by patients.

There are many medicines like Alprazolam, Carbamazepine, Dilantin, Lamotrigine, Leupeptine, Memantine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, Risperdal, and Tretinoin available in the market which can also be used in the treatment of epilepsy. However, Pregabalin is the only one that has proven results and has been approved by FDA for this purpose. Pregabalin is a newer medicine and therefore there is not much data regarding its long-term use. One of the positive aspects of Pregabalin is that it is an irreversible surgery drug and therefore there are no relapses even after a patient stops using the medicine. Pregabalin is a cheap medicine for epilepsy and thus is easily available.
